The Mummy – Short Review

The mummy film is directed by  Alex Kurtzman. It is a film from the mummy franchise. The film stars Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, Javier Botet and Russell Crowe.

Nick Morton played by tom cruise and his partner Chris Vails discovers a tomb after an air strike . The archaeologist Jenney Halsey played by Annabelle Wallis investigates the tomb and it is taken to England for further investigation. Later in the plane Chris Vails kills the sergeant  due to a bite from the camel spider that  possessed Vail with Ahamanet powers . This leads to the destruction of the plane and further takes the story forward.

Princess Ahamanet  who was stripped of her birthright determined to claim the throne for herself. For this, Ahamanet sold her soul to the Egyptian god Set, who gave her a special dagger to transfer his spirit into a corporeal form. Following this she even sacrifices her lover and there happens many events connecting to this.

The film revolves around the modern ages where the so called ancient ghost and souls are captured and used for their powers for experiments. The film has a lot of loopholes and it doesn’t have the caliber to  entertain audience. In fact it may seem as a comedy film if viewed differently. The soldiers that Ahamanet made looks less like soldiers and more like zombies  that are seen in the comedy genre films The only thing positive about the movie is Tom Cruise’s performance. Being the kind of artist he is he has the capability to illuminate even a bad movie. But it pains me to acknowledge that even his performance couldn’t make The Mummy a better movie.

The film came to theatre with a lot of hype and expectations. But the film fails to stand up to those expectations. Although it follows the tradition of Mummy movies that came before, the movie fails on every level. We can also say that the movie is very sexist as well as racist. The characters are very poorly written and we fail to understand what their significance or motive is. We can conclude that the movie was the worst of its kind and also the worst of Tom Cruise’s career.
